Your Questions Answered: Common Ice Fishing FAQ’s

Ice fishing is an exhilarating winter adventure that provides beginners and experienced anglers a chance to reel in some incredible fish! It’s also a unique experience that allows you to take in the beauty of Lake Michigan covered in ice and snow. Going ice fishing with an experienced charter service, like Jack’s Charter Fishing, is a great option, because it gives you peace of mind knowing everything is already taken care of. But, just in case you aren’t familiar with our charter services or want to make sure you’re ready for your ice fishing excursion, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to put your mind at ease, so you can feel prepared for your ice fishing trip with Jack’s Charter.

When Does Ice Fishing Occur?

Weather can be unpredictable in the Midwest, especially in the winter. However, we typically set out on our ice fishing adventures starting in January and can go up through March, depending on the weather. These, of course, are rough estimates based on typical fishing seasons, so if you aren’t sure if a date will work for ice fishing, give our expert staff a call and they can help you schedule a trip that offers you the best ice fishing experience.

How Long is the Trip?

Our guided ice fishing trips typically commence at 7 A.M and last for 5 hours.

Do I Need Special Equipment?

One of the best parts of booking an ice fishing trip with Jack’s Charter is that you don’t need to bring anything with you. All fishing equipment is provided. Rods, reels, tackle, and bait are all included!

At Jack’s Charter, we combine state of the art ice fishing equipment with comfort. Our captains provide automated hook-setting tools that are positioned near our heated Eskimo ice shacks and utilize fish locators to pinpoint underwater hotspots. This means your chances of hooking a fish are increased and you get to stay warm and cozy while you wait for the fish to bite.

What Should I Wear?

Since our ice fishing trips happen during those cold, blistery months, we highly recommend wearing warm clothes and plenty of layers. Since we’ll be spending time on the ice, it can also be beneficial to wear water resistant shoes and outer layers.

We also recommend bringing an extra set of clothes just in case yours get wet, or you need extra layers to keep you warm when you aren’t in the heated ice shacks.
